Travelling during the Pandemic: 5 Safety Tips

  1. Figure out your mode of transportation

Back then, we use to have a lot of options when it comes to choosing our mode of transportation. From planes, trains, to buses – travellers can easily pick which one suits them the best. Although the top three public transportations are still existed on new normal era, there are a lot of changes that comes with it.

According to car remains as the safest mode of transportation that people can choose. Car travel allows us to have a controlled environment on the journey, so that any harm can be minimized. Of course, this doesn’t mean you can’t take public transportations to get to your destination. Though, there are some important things to bear in mind.

For example, if you’re planning on travelling to Bandung from Jakarta by train, make sure you have a face mask and face shield on. As the journey will only be 3 hours, limit yourself from eating too much food – since you’re unable to do said activity without taking your mask off. Last but not least, keep your hands clean at any time by applying hand sanitizer or washing it with soap.

  1. Get coronavirus test before and after the trip

This might be the trickiest part before your trip, but these days we have to make sure that any necessary action is taken. A spoke person from Centers for Disease Control (CDC) stated for that getting Coronavirus test before travelling is vital for many different reasons. One of them is reducing the risk of Covid-19 spread in public transportation, as well as the city that travellers will visit.

In Indonesia, there are two methods of Coronavirus tests which grow quite popular – Rapid test and PCR test. These tests can be done in hospitals, clinics, pharmacies, airports, or train stations. Some airlines and other transportation services even offer a package, where you can get your ticket and Rapid Test before boarding.

After spending some time away from home, travellers are also advised to get another Coronavirus test. This is necessary to prevent your loved ones from getting ill. Once you get the test result back, make sure to conduct self-quarantine at least for 7 days.

  1. Find hotel with strict health protocol


When finding accommodation used to be the easiest thing to do, new normal era makes us more cautious. Travellers are encouraged to make sure that, the hotel of their choosing have a strict health protocol. Because, there is nothing more relieving than knowing our safety is well guaranteed.

  1. Create a thorough itinerary

Since you will be travelling under a very different and new circumstances, it is important to make sure you have everything figure out. First, make a list of places that will be safe to visit. For example, if you’re planning on visiting a popular coffee shop, make sure the place conducts a strict health protocol.

If you want to visit well-known tourist attractions, perhaps you can start by finding museums or art galleries around the area. Since social distancing is vital in new normal era, these two places will be most likely has a controlled environment other than amusement park. To limit your time on public transportation, you can rent a car, motorcycle, or bike to get around. Needless to say, you can still have a lot of fun on your trip with thorough preparation.

  1. Pack your bag with new normal essentials

There is no way you can leave the house without these essentials; face mask, hand sanitizer, antibacterial wipes, disinfectant spray, and face shield (if needed). For face mask, you have to make sure that it has at least 3 layers in it – whether the one’s made out of cloth or medical standard fabric. According to studies conducted by World Health Organization (WHO), while medical mask remains the most effective tool to prevent the spread of Coronavirus, cloth mask can also be used as long as it made with 3 layers.

Hand sanitizer is another important gear for you to bring along, if you can’t find any hand basins nearby. Study shows that hand sanitizer with less than 60% alcohol is not as effective, so you have to make sure not to pick this one. Next, antibacterial wipes or disinfectant spray can also be a great addition to your new normal essentials. If you’re planning on eating out, you can use antibacterial wipes to clean your table even your belongings – cell phone, wallet, or any other you keep in your bag.
